You have the detex from TL'11? :-)

With TL-2010 if I run detex on

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
Hello World\footnote{ footnote}
\end{document}

I only get

Hello World

rather than the expected

Hello World footnote

isn't that what you get too?
