I blush to say that this is my first attempt w/ latexmk (though I've long felt something like that was needed and have admired the effort at creating it), so all of my files are fresh....
and I'm pleased to report that a sample file which Herb sent me separately worked perfectly, so there seems to be something odd w/ the file:
~/Library/TeXShop/Engines/Inactive/Asymptote/Sample.tex
