[OS X TeX] problem with citation keys when writing in French

I thought this might be the case, but I am surprised nevertheless: I would have thought that BibTex (or natbib, I don't know which) would have done its work on what is contained in my text, before formatting by LaTeX.

And there is the fact that it did work without problem back in 2007.

Anyway, I needed to complete the document, so I modified the cite keys both in the bib file and in my document. But I would very much like to find a more elegant solution!
