Howdy,

As far as I'm concerned, you don't need tlmgr --gui! If you are on OS X 10.5 or later use TeX Live Utility (TLU) for many useful tasks (via tlmgr). For those very rarely needed tasks that TLU may not do simply use tlmgr via Terminal directly.
