Various texmf.cnf files set up search paths for the components of TeX.  

	kpsexpand '$TEXINPUTS'

on a command line and you might be able to see where and in which  
order TeX searches for input (CLS, STY files). It might be easier to  
see it with this command:

	kpsexpand '$TEXINPUTS' | tr ',:' '\n'

Directory paths starting with ``!!´´ are not searched but looked up in  
ls-R "cache" files.

Some documentation is contained in the texmf.cnf files. Other  
documentation can be obtained from running

	texdoc tds
