[OS X TeX] Modified enumeration

I am trying to get enumeration in the form of

A1.
A2.
A3.

Text

B1.
B2.

etc. I have not been able to figure out how to do it. I did discover the enumitem package and tried 

\begin{enumerate}[label=\Alph{enumi}\arabic*.]
\item ...
\item ...
\end{enumerate}

but that gives

A1.
B1.

I suspect there is some way to do what I want. Many thanks for any pointers.
