Actually, I have been trying to track things down and I discovered that the spacing is not due to the enumeration commands. I am using a \nobibliography{...} command in a resume.cls document to typeset my publications that I keep in one big bibtex file. So, here is what I was doing
\begin{category}{Publications}
\bibliographystyle{plain}
\nobibliography{%
misc,%
publishers,%
publications,%
references%
}
\citem{Authored/Co-authored Books:}
\begin{enumerate}
\item \bibentry{Golab:2010fj}.
\item \bibentry{ov99}.
\item \bibentry{ozsu86}.
\end{enumerate}
This used to generate the bibliography where I wanted it without the "References" heading. This used to work fine until today (well, I just recompiled my resume today) and now I discover that it is causing the spacing. The funny thing is that Google search for \nobibliography is not turning up anything, so I am not even sure where I had discovered this in the first place.
