I suspect that your difficulties may be related to a bit of a disconnect.
TeX requires that one install support files as well as fonts, which are then specified by calling them out w/ font definition commands which are normally grouped together w/ supporting macros in a \usepackage line such as Herb Schulz noted:

LyX, as a graphical front-end for LaTeX, in addition to needing one to specify the fonts to be used for output, has options for specifying the fonts used to depict the document in the interface --- so if one wants these to be in synch, then one would need to:
- tell LyX to use the tgtermes font for the LaTeX back-end (there's a pane in the dialog for doing this LyX:Document Settings | Fonts, but it's gotten really messy --- wish they'd left the top-level choice for packages, so instead, you should add \usepackage{tgtermes} to the LaTeX Preamble Document Settings Pane.
- install the tgtermes font files into the Mac OS X graphical interface (using Font Book as Peter Dyballa noted --- Font Book should be in your Applications folder)
- set LyX to use the tgtermes font in its interface (if desired)
