Much like what you initially thought. I have the pdf (a book which is generated by a master source file with many inputs for source files for different sections) open in TS preview, but the source file for that section has not been opened in TS for some time.
While I now have a Magic Mouse, I am still learning to use it (a pain, I should add),
so I try to use the old one-button method: I command-click
(yes, that was my misstatement)
on the text, and true, if the source file for that section has already been opened in TS, everything goes correctly. But if I haven't worked on that section for some time, I get a window whose content is totally blank, and at the top, where the filename goes, I get the filename followed by "-Locked". I understood from earlier correspondence that the appropriate response is to click on the "-Locked" to get a pulldown menu with choices that includes an unlock option. If I click on that, I get an error pane saying "This file cannot be unlocked. You can duplicate and edit the copy." If I choose unlock, I get a second pane, also devoid of text, and at the top it says <filename>-copy.
If I go to where the source file is located and open it from TS in that location, I get a perfectly workable unlocked file.
So this sounds like a sync problem.

The source files, as well as the pdf, are saved in dropbox.

I forgot to mention the important detail that this phenomenon occurs when I open a source file by control-clicking text in the preview; I can open the original file directly with no problem.

I assume you mean control-clicking to bring up the contextual menu then choosing "Sync" to bring the source forward?

In any case, I don't see anything like what you talk about, using 3.06 under Lion. I can unlock files in the way you suggest.

If you just start editing the file without unlocking, you should get a sheet telling you the file is locked and giving you the option to unlock it. What happens if you try that?

Is the file on a network volume or such?

Chris

Howdy,

Hmmm... If I only open the pdf file and Ctl-Click and then choose Sync (should be the same as Cmd-Click alone I'd guess) nothing happens; i.e., the source doesn't open. If I have both the source and the pdf open and I do that it goes to the correct spot in the Source. Of course this can only happen if the .synctex.gz file is also present. In any case I'm not understanding what the procedure to recreate this problem.

Good Luck,

Howdy,

Some stuff I still don't understand. Is the source file that synctex is supposed to go back to from the pdf already open when you do this?
no
If it isn't I see nothing happening (with 3.06). Does each of the included or input files have a line at the top of the file giving the path to the root file that looks like

% !TEX root = path/to/rootfile.tex
yes

where path/to/rootfile.tex is the absolute or relative path from the included file back to the root file?
all the files in the project (source and intermediate) have
%!TEX root = Hardcore2.tex
at the top
Then, even if the included file is Locked when I open it TeXShop also opens the root file and the pdf and I can go to that file by clicking a location in the pdf that refers back to that included file.
I haven't tried that, but this will still force me to manually search for the text I want to locate in the ultimate source file

Do you have ANY of the source files open when you are Cmd-Clicking on the pdf?
usually, yes
Either the root file or any of the included file (which also opens the root file IF you include the line above at the top of the file).

If ALL you do is open the pdf directly in TeXShop there is no way for TeXShop to be able to know how or where that pdf was generated. In that case I still don't see what you are seeing; for me nothing happens.
The pdf gets opened when I double-click on one of the source files, but then when I have gone one to other sections I get the problem---sometimes.

I should add that I was using this procedure with TS 2.?? with no problems for a long time. The problem only started to occur when I switched to 3.04 (now to 3.06).
