Because I have absolutely no idea of what I am doing and, by myself,
leave well enough alone.

I just removed Donald Arseneau's \url{} and things still work.
Amazing. Thanks.

I am using
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
for reasons long forgotten. I just removed it and thing still work.
Amazing. Thanks.

Assuming you refer to TeXShop's preference for Source, then the answer
is Western (Mac OS Roman). The reason? Because, presumably, that's the
way it came when I installed MacTeX 2011 after moving, with great
effort, to 10.5.8
To explain matters, may I remind you that, for all TeX matters, I
rely mostly on this list. (Companion 2 fell apart from very heavy use,
but, by now, is not of much use and Google can be very iffy.) As
stated in <http://www.freemathtexts.org/Acknowledgments.php>
"And the many others who, over time, bailed me out of this or that
hole I had dug myself into and who, I hope, will forgive me for not
naming them: they are way too many but I still know who they are."
Most grateful regards to all.
