Folks,

I agree with every point Herb has made about MacTeX-2012
EXCEPT

This is almost surely false. TeX Live is getting bigger.

We switched from Apple's old PackageMaker to the new one
introduced around Leopard time because only packages created by
the newer PackageMaker can be signed. Signed install packages are 
required by Mountain Lion. Only flat packages can be signed,
so we switched to them --- a flat package is a single file rather
than a folder disguised to look like a file. As Herb points out,
flat packages don't have to be zipped for the internet.

Both versions of PackageMaker compressed install components,
so zipping old packages didn't decrease their size.
