[OS X TeX] a problem with pdftex/TeXShop

I have a .tex filt that yesterday I was able to process with either pdftex 
directly or Typset from within TeXShop (v2.26 on Mac OS 10.6.8).  Today 
neither works, but the errors are different.

Directly from a terminal screen:

pdftex for_bill

I open the file in TeXShop and hit Typeset (some of my preamble lines were 
set for divps to pdf).  In this case it does not seem to mind the 
documentcall, but does not like the .pdf file that looks fine in Acrobat.
