Use 

\usepackage[XXX]{inputenc}
\usepackage[portuguese]{babel}

where XXX = latin1, applemac or utf-8 and so on, depending on what text encoding are you using to save your documents (see the Source > Encoding section of your TeXShop preferences pane).
