I noted in the previous message is there but it certainly isn't as ``bad'' as I originally believed. If my previous message made you already move your fonts to the system-wide, texmf-local, tree I still think you did the right thing! (I've been a proponent of using that tree for fonts since the early days of gwTeX. And I believe there still are advantages for using that tree.) However, it appears that the work necessary to maintain a personal tree can be minimized but not completely eliminated. Some of that work can even be automated in an upcoming version of TeX Live Utility. (Note: if you use tlmgr manually there will still be an extra step necessary after each update to make your personal fonts be in sync with updates to the system's fonts.)

I have to confess that I never really understood how fonts work with pdftex (I guess no one really does), but my beautiful Stempel Garamond ('peg') doesn't seem to be impressed by the changes. Could this be because I use the \pdfmapfile command? If I understand correctly this doesn't seem to be the 'normal' way to add new fonts.

Pdf(la)tex understands ttf fonts but dvips doesn't so you usually use a package that is only for pdf(la)tex that loads the map file separately rather than loading the map file for all drivers.

Howdy,

It's still because of the use of \pdfmapfile although it's unusual to not install for all engines it still works fine with pdf(la)tex. Is the package you are using meant only for pdf(la)tex? If you wrote it yourself you could add the map so all engines could use it and then comment out the \pdfmapfile command. No real need to do that unless you wish to use another engine, e.g., xe(la)tex, at some point. PS: I also use pdflatex most of the time.

Good Luck,
