Howdy,

Migration Assistant (which is what the Setup Assistant runs when you startup a new computer) used to only read from a disk, i.e., another mac in Target Disk mode. The new behavior came about because of the rise of the Macbook Air. The transfer of about 75GB of data from the iMac to the Macbook Air using Target Disk Mode and a Thunderbolt cable took less than 15min so that goes very fast.
