I just tried the source Victor shows above and I still do not see the blue shape. This is with a fully updated TeX Live 2012 on a retina MBP running a fully updated OS X 10.8.2. Could it be the graphics card in this machine (I don't see it in Preview either since it also uses PDFKit)?

I was sort of coming to that conclusion but was waiting for other input from retina display owners.
