The .tex files for which I changed the icons (by pasting icons in the getinfo window) now are associated with TextWrangler and those that I have not are TeX source files but have the icon of an executable file for the terminal.

Thanks for the reply. I used Cocktail from Maintain. Didn't work, so I tried Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner.app and it didn't work either. Tried the Safe Boot with no luck. Creating a new file gives me the same plain white rectangle. I am not having trouble on my iMac which is still running OS X 10.8.3 (I did not update to 10.8.4) so that may be my problem.

On the iMac the GetInfo window in the category of kind, a .tex file is classified as "TeX Document." On my laptop in the GetInfo window under kind, a .tex file is classified as "TeX source file." I tried attaching a .tex file and mailing it from the iMac to the MacBookPro. When I attached it the icon is there. When it arrives it no longer has the icon and is now a "TeX source file."

It is only cosmetic, but I have become used to quickly identifying files by the icon. Is anyone else using the latest update 10.8.4? It was released on June 4. That may have been when I began losing my icons.
