[OS X TeX] Two Excalibur problems

The recent message of Themis Matsoukas about Excalibur has reminded me that I have been essentially unable to use it since some time ("essentially" means on many files, but not all). I started to investigate, reinstall, trash preferences, experiment, to finally conclude I have two problems, which may not be exactly Excalibur's fault, but which I would love to solve in some way. They are of completely different character, so please do not mix them.
1) When doing "LaTeX parsing" (which of course I need for LaTeX documents) it reports as LaTeX errors (and stops, refusing to continue scanning the file) the macro definitions of the kind
\let\class\mathsf
because it expects \mathsf to be a command with one argument, and here none shows up. I know the obvious solution is to replace it by
\newcommand{\class}[1]{\mathsf{#1}}
However, the first form is much more convenient, and solving this would imply a huge work on many definitions in many documents.
2) Even if you have checked in preferences to use "extended character set" to treat accents, it seems to have what I presume is an encoding problem. My catalan files (written and saved in isolatin1) get scanned as if they are a different encoding, as it is presented in the box where it shows a portion of the text: à -> ‡, ò -> Ú, ç -> Á, etc. In the first case, this cuts the word in two nonsense halves needing correction (matemàtica -> matem + tica), in others the read word is flagged as incorrect (lògica -> lÚgica). The funny thing is that the suggested replacements from the dicctionaries, including the personal one, appear with the right accents.
For these two reasons I have refrained from using it -after many many years- but would love to overcome these problems. I will much appreciate any suggestions.
Of course I am using Excalibur's latest version 4.0.7. The reported problems appear either in Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion.
