[OS X TeX] OS 10.6.8 and app store

It is possible to download yosemite on a usb stick, say from some other computer that allows you to download, then install from the stick. See http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/16/make-os-x-yosemite-boot-install-drive/ or Google for more info. I've done it and it's easy.
