Amen to that suggestion! In fact, even splitting the savings of avoiding a compositor between the authors and the publisher might be attractive to both parties in such a case: composing a math book typically involves extra compositor's fees for "penalty copy" -- lots of symbols.

Moreover, compositors, particularly those not accustomed to doing math, can make a real mess of typesetting math.
