Howdy,

TeXShop uses a special icon for .tex files and other files, like .sty and .cls files, use the system default document icon.

You don't mention what version of TeXShop and OS X you are using but if you are seeing the a miniature version of the contents of the files in a given folder in Finder open View->Show View Options (Cmd-J) and un-check Icon Preview for the folder where you keep those files. 

If .tex documents are using the default document icon most likely you need to re-build the Launch Services database. You can do this using the appropriate version of Cache Cleaner (e.g., Mavericks Cache Cleaner for OS X 10.9).
