Dear Richard,
Many thanks for your response.
I used the MetaPost engine, didn’t know about the nv-metapost, which indeed works fine!
Thanks so much for your hint.

Andrea,
The binomial.mp file you included in a recent email typeset fine for
me and produced a Preview Window with two pages. The first shows two
triangles joined by a line at the top, and the second shows some trees.
Are you using the nv-metapost engine included in the latest versions of TeXShop?
If not, go to
~/Library/TeXShop/Engines/Inactive/MetaPostEngines-1.4.7
and activate the two engines in the Engines subfolder of this location.

Dear Ramis,
Many thanks for your response.
I tried to add the .pdf extension to open the file but it still doesn’t open.
No, no warnings upon compilation either. Here is what I would get for example:
This is MetaPost, version 1.504 (kpathsea version 6.1.0)
(mpost.mp (/usr/local/texlive/2012/texmf-dist/metapost/base/plain.mp
Preloading the plain mem file, version 1.004)) (./binomial.mp [1{pdftex.map}]
[2] )
2 output files written: binomial.1 .. binomial.2
Transcript written on binomial.log.
And attached is a screenshot of the files.
Many thanks again for your help

Hi,
any warnings/errors when compiling? Are you sure it is not a PDF (just add the “.pdf” extension to the file and open it).

Dear colleagues,
On my former Macintosh computer I had no problem compiling MetaPost files within TeXShop, which produced a readable pdf file.
With the new TeXShop version on OS10.9 I obtain a file without extension that appears an exe file in the Finder and cannot be opened with any program I have.
If anybody knows the trick how to obtain the right pdf format as an output I would be very grateful.
Thanks.
Andrea
