If you rarely need a single opening [ and want to automatically generate a matching ] you can add [ to the Key Bindings file (assuming you have Key bindings turned on). For a typed [ you can have it generate [#SEL##INS#] (i.e., generate  [ and ] and place any selection and then the insertion point between them).
