Still a good first buy. Others to consider

 - LaTeX for Complete Novices, Nicola Talbot (free as an e-book,
   http://www.dickimaw-books.com/latex/index.html)

 - LaTeX and Friends, Marc van Dongen (computer science
   knowledge assumed in a few places)

 - LaTeX Beginners Guide, Stefan Kottwitz (good for
   'bite sized' ideas, slightly marred by poor figures
   due to publisher using PNGs!)
