[OS X TeX] eps graphics

It used to be that   eps graphics produced by illustrator were be placed inside the bounding box of the graphic with all other blank space trimmed. Now it seems that the entire page (or “artboard" in illustrator CS5) is displayed in the pdf output, which means manual trimming of the graphic is required. Is this a recent change, or I’m missing something?
