Actually, NVIDIA had to pay for the replacements, not Apple, because it was the fault of their GPUs.

I was making huge 48 MP TIFF scans of old slides and editing them in Aperture. Aperture probably makes intensive use of the GPU for all sorts of filters and adjustments, hence the overheating.
