[OS X TeX] how to add Greek character

Thank you gentlemen for your answers - but they go waaaay beyond what I need and understand.
All I wanted was to add the 8 Greek chars in my footnote - .\footnote{Hoi polloi (Ancient Greek: οἱ πολλοί, hoi polloi, "the many"), ……}

I ended up using the LaTeX Panel …
\footnote{Hoi polloi (Ancient Greek: o$\iota$  $\pi$o$\lambda$$\lambda$o$\iota$, hoi polloi. "the many"),  ……}
