[OS X TeX] Install fail

Howdy,

If it is brand new how did the Fink stuff get on the system. I'd guess there is a problem with the Fink version of tar on your system. I'd guess you don't have the Fink version of tar on your MacBook Pro. What does

which tar

return on that system?

The main difference between the DVD install and the downloaded MacTeX install is that the first uses the TeX Live installer on the DVD to save space while, in the second case, the complete TeX Live is part of the installer.
