I seem to remember that the characters have to be converted to outlines but don't remember how one dies that. 

A couple of comments about the commands given above: first, there is no need to use the [pdftex] option to the graphicx package dine it auto detects that; second, no need to load the epstopdf package since the graphicx package loads that.
