[OS X TeX] weird behavior (follow up)

Zbigniew,
Certainly using "Get Info" is the thing to do when an
unusual app tries to open a TeXShop file. This step almost
always fixes the problem, and if you have this sort of
trouble, most of us will assume you tried the step before
writing.
--------------
You might like to try a technique I use here. As you might
guess, I have LOTS of different versions of TeXShop on my
machine. So long ago I gave up on double clicking a file
to open it in TeXShop, because I never knew which
version would run.
Instead I keep the latest TeXShop on my desktop.
(Another similar technique is to drag the
icon for `/Library/TeX/TeXShop to the dock, and then always
move new versions of the program to ~/Library/TeX/TeXShop.)
Either way, there is a visible TeXShop icon on the desktop,
and I know that it points to the latest version.
If I'm going to work on a document that I often work on,
I just start TeXShop by double-clicking the TeXShop icon,
and use the menu item "Open Recent."
And if I want to work on an older document, I find
that document and drag it's icon to the TeXShop icon and drop it
there.
Thus I never double click a file icon, and I'm certain the latest TeXShop
is running. These techniques are fast and easy.

I hadn’t ever used the “get info” option: on a random tex source file, under “open with”, it listed a long list of applications, but put Excalibur (now) as the default. The other ones included about six different versions of TeXShop, all but one of them labeled with a version number that tells me I no longer even have it. One is listed simply with the TeXShop logo, no version number. Is there a way to (1) check what version that one is, and (2) if so, to make it automatically the default for all such files? This certainly seems to be the root of my problem, I suppose when the logic board was changed (or when I installed TeXShop 6.35) the default was somehow re-set.

It works fine, but I happened to notice that (in finder, when I am in Applications) the information about “last modified" says it was July 18, not today (July 20). I think July 18 may have been when I installed the previous time.

Opening a tex source file from within TeXShop works fine. But if I simply click on the source file while in finder, it tries to open a different application. First it was MS Communicator, which I then trashed. Then it was TeXworks, which at least is more relevant, but I don’t use it, so I trashed that. Now it is Excalibur. The computer is going back to Apple tomorrow.

The icon next to the copy turns from a tex source icon to a word document icon—the listing in finder still says it is a tex document, but when I try to open it I get a message saying that I need to be signed in to Communicator to view a contact list, and I get a box to sign in to Communicator. For context, I have used word, but never communicator, in the past.

If that's TeXShop double clicking the file should open it in TeXShop. Another thing that might be helpful would be to run `mdls` on that file in Terminal; in Terminal type `mdls ` (notice the space) and then drag and drop the problematic file onto the Terminal window and hit Return. Let us know what it returns.
