[OS X TeX] weird behavior

Thanks—that seemed to work. So is Launch Services a TS feature, or an OS X feature?

At the moment, it says Excalibur (default for all files like this). When I click the up/down arrow to the right of this, I get a list of apps, with Excalibur first, followed by many others. Partway down the list is a sequence of TeXShop logos, most labeled with a version number—all of them versions I replaced long ago. One is not labeled. I guess for an individual file I could move that one (which hopefully is the TS 6.35 I recently loaded), but the problem is that this happened to ALL my .tex files, of which there are very many.

Richard Koch suggested the obvious workaround (or more accurately, more reliable standard procedure): instead of double-clicking, open every such file from within (the appropriate version of) TeXShop.

Howdy,

Ugly!

When you do a Get Info... (Cmd-I) on a selected .tex file there is a section of window that says Open With. What is the selected application in that section. That should be application you desire to open the file when double clicked. What does it say?

Good Luck,

Herb:
I concluded that this was an OS X or Apple problem (my logic board was replaced in the past week or so, and this problem is probably related to that). Opening a tex source file from within TeXShop works fine. But if I simply click on the source file while in finder, it tries to open a different application. First it was MS Communicator, which I then trashed. Then it was TeXworks, which at least is more relevant, but I don’t use it, so I trashed that. Now it is Excalibur. The computer is going back to Apple tomorrow.

To answer your question, the finder window lists information about the contents of a folder, including the type of
file in each case. There it was recognized as a tex document consistently.

Thanks for the advice.

I just recently (last few days) updated my TeXShop to version 3.65 and the first time I tried to use it I am getting the following very strange behavior—it sounds like an OS X problem, but it only started after the TexShop change, so I am going here first.

I have a TeX source file which I want to copy and modify. I duplicate it via command-D. The icon next to the copy turns from a tex source icon to a word document icon—the listing in finder still says it is a tex document, but when I try to open it I get a message saying that I need to be signed in to Communicator to view a contact list, and I get a box to sign in to Communicator. For context, I have used word, but never communicator, in the past.

I just checked, and it is not the copy that is the problem. If I try to open the original tex file I get the same error message.

Any suggestions?

Howdy,

I'm not sure what you mean by `the listing in finder still says it is a tex document'. If you do a Get Info… (Cmd-I) in Finder for that file what is the Open With setting? If that's TeXShop double clicking the file should open it in TeXShop. Another thing that might be helpful would be to run `mdls` on that file in Terminal; in Terminal type `mdls ` (notice the space) and then drag and drop the problematic file onto the Terminal window and hit Return. Let us know what it returns.

Howdy,

Sigh... unless you really have all those older versions of TeXShop it sounds like your LaunchServices database is corrupt. What version of OS X are you using? (I may have said this before.)

One thing you might try is select one of your .tex file and again do a Get Info…. Select the version of TeXShop in the list that you think is correct and select it for that file. The grayed out Change All… button will become active and can click it. You'll be asked if you want all .tex files to open with this application and agree to that. Then all .tex files will open with that application.

Good Luck,
