Sorry - meant to add that on both systems I have MacTex 2016 installed, and it was up to date as of 10/31 when this occurred.
Also, I compile on each system.
That said, I was not paying attention, exactly, to what I was doing, viz: the source file is in DropBox, and I find that synctex does work on the system where I compile. If I compile on 10.11.6, it (synctex) stops working on 10.6.8; while compiling on 10.6.8 causes no problem on 10.11.6.
The simple answer appears to be "don't do that" (i.e., a short between the headphones).
