Howdy,
We just discovered a small bug in BasicTeX0217.pkg that has a distribution date of 20170523. The bug has been fixed in the mactex-basictex-20170607.pkg and it should be getting distributed to the repositories in the next few days. Please give it a chance to get around before attempting a download.
If you've already installed BasicTeX-2017 from the 20170523 version it is possible to fix the problem using a text editor, even TeXShop if you wish. First run the command
cp /usr/local/texlive/2017basic/texmf.cnf ~/Desktop
in Terminal.app; which will copy a small file called texmf.cnf to your Desktop. Then open that file in your Editor (e.g., simply drop it onto the TeXShop icon). There will be a line that reads
TEXMFVAR = ~Library/texlive/2017basic/texmf-var
and place a / between the ~ and L to make it
TEXMFVAR = ~/Library/texlive/2017basic/texmf-var
then Save the file and Quit your Editor. Finally execute the command
sudo cp ~/Desktop/texmf.cnf /usr/local/texlive/2017basic/texmf.cnf
in Terminal.app, giving your Admin password when prompted. That will replace the original texmf.cnf file with the corrected version. You're Done! You can then remove the texmf.cf file from your Desktop.
Good Luck,
