[OS X TeX] Bug(?) in matrix panel?

I am finding that when I try to compile source code involving matrices, the opening “\left[“ (for a matrix) or “\left|” (for a determinant) is read by the compiler as “\let” and returns an error message.  This happens more oftern when I have typed the phrase myself, and sometimes it is corrected by going to matrix panel and re-inserting the matrix, but sometimes also the phrase when inserted by matrix panel returns the same error.  I’m finding it unpredictable
when it will happen, but when it does I am in trouble.


Is this a known error, or is it something about my computer?
