[OS X TeX] TeX Live Utility: is the tlmgr an alternative?

You can switch to an administrator using the login switcher in the top menu

If you are thinking of doing an ’su -l <adminname>’ and then sudo from there, maybe.  The ’su’ man page says admin and wheel group membership is required to su to root, but it doesn’t otherwise specify.
