[OS X TeX] TeX Live Utility 1.49 fails to update old TeXLive 2019 and leaves it unusable.

We need to see the complete TeX Live Utility log from that update session to understand how it failed. The section you sent just shows that building formats failed.

How were you trying to update a TeX Live 2019? What repository did you use? Was the Big Sur laptop also using TeX Live 2019? What is the `TeX Programs' item in TLU's Preferences set to?
