Yes, I set the TeXShop editor to auto complete quotes, so hitting the (double) quote key gives me opening…closing. I’ve frogotten how to turn this off.
I went through and changed the initial quotes by deleting then typing the double quotation sign and erasing the first part. Am I correct that I have now entered the
correct form of quotation mark? If not, how do I get it on my computer?

Here is my full list of abbreviations, with all the quotes changed as indicated above. Is this right or should I do something else to that?
@string{Acta =''Acta Mathematica''}
@string{AmJMath =''American Journal of Mathematics''}
@string{AMMonth =''American Mathematical Monthly''}
@string{AMS =''American Mathematical Society''}
@string{Annals =''Annals of Mathematics''}
@string{AnnENS =''Annales scientifiques de l'{\'E}cole Normal Superiore''}
@string{BAMS =''Bulletin of the AMS''}
@string{BSM =''Bulletin des sciences math{\'e}matiques''}
@string{CRAS =''Comptes rendus habdomadires des s{\/e}ances de l'Acad{\'e}mie des Sciences, Paris''}
@string{Fundamenta=''Fundamenta Mathematicae''}
@string{JDMV =''Jahresbericht der Deutschen Mathematiker-Vereinigung''}
@strintg{JMpa =''Journal de Math{\'e}matiques Pures et Appliqu{\'e}es''}
@string{JraM =''Journal f{\"u}r die reine und angewandte Mathematik''}
@string{MathAnn =''Mathmatische Annalen''}
@string{MathMag =''Mathematics Magazine''}
@string{MessMath =''The Messenger of Mathematics''}
@string{MonatsfM =''Monatshefte f{\"u}r Mathematik''}
@string{PAMS =''Proceedings of the AMS''}
@string{PCambPhil =''Proceedings of the Cambridge Mathematical Society''}
@string{PLMS =''Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society''}
@string{RendLincei =''Rendconditi del Reale Accademia del Lincei''}
@string{RendPalermo=''Rendconditi del Circulo Matematico di Palermo''}
@string{RevHistSci =''Revue d'histoire des sciences''}
@string{TAMS =''Transactions of the AMS''}
@string{TCambPhil =''Transactions of the Cambridge Philosophical Society''}

I still get an error message:

I think the reason is that you have written ”Acta Mathematica” with opening and closing quotation marks. It should be simply "Acta Mathematica". Maybe your editor converts the quotation marks automatically to opening and closing, which are different.

I’m confused by the following phenomenon:

Following the LaTex Companion, \S 13.2.3 (pp 769ff), I tried to make my references to standard journals uniform by putting, at the beginning of my .bib file, a set of abbreviations in the following format (eg):
@string{Acta =``Acta Mathematica''}

and then use the abbreviation in the following way (eg):
@article{Poincare:residues,
author={Henri Poincar\'e},
title={\foreignlanguage{french}{Sur les residusdes int\'egrales doubles}},
journal=Acta,
volume={9},
year={1886/7},
pages={321-380}
}

I get an error messages in my console:
This is BibTeX, Version 0.99d (TeX Live 2017)
The top-level auxiliary file: Coeur.aux
The style file: plain.bst
Database file #1: calculus.bib
Warning--string name "``acta" is undefined
--line 2 of file calculus.bib
Missing "}" in string command---line 2 of file calculus.bib
 : @string{acta  =``acta
 :                       Mathematica''}
I'm skipping whatever remains of this command

and it seems to quit after a lot of these kinds of errors.

What am I doing wrong? Has the format changed since the Latex Companion was written?
