Tom,
  Thanks very much for this! I seems to work smoothly on my system.  

It would be nice if this could be combined with AppleScript commands to typeset the document, so that a single action from BBEdit would typeset the document and highlight the current position of the BBEdit cursor in TexShop. But, my clumsy attempt to do this led to a quick realization that getting things to happen in the right order is trickier than I imagined, because AppleScript doesn’t wait for the typesetting to be completed before the sync commands are executed.
