Hi Herb,

Thanks.

The epstopdf-sys.cfg file is indeed local (in ~Library/tex/latex/config.

Well, I deleted it in my desktop and now conversion works.

Still the mystery remains as to why ostensibly the same TeX setup in my laptop tolerates my config file

and does the conversions, while in my desktop the config file is intolerable, and just removing it -- leaving all else the same -- restores conversions.

But I will leave this puzzle for another day.

Cheers,
George

If you want a config file for your system create an `epstopd.cfg' file (no quotes) with the commands and place it in /usr/local/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex/config (you may have to create some folders in this nest - use sudo when you do). Make sure to run `sudo mktexlsr` so the system knows it's there. I enclose the version I use which defines the conversion for tif(f)->png and gif->png (this is always UGLY) using Apple's `sip` converter.
