[OS X TeX] TLU critical update failure

For the past several days, when TeX Live Utility is opened, it pops up a window  "Critical updates available" . When I press the Update button there and, in response to the usual macOS-demanded prompt, provide my user password, I get another TLU popup window, "The update failed."

I'm using as repository http://tug.ctan.org/tex-archive/systems/texlive/tlnet.

This is with TeX Live Utility 1.54 and MacTeX/TeXLive 2023 under macOS Sonoma 14.1.1.

 How can this be fixed? (Or should I be asking who should be fixing this on the server end?)
