[OS X TeX] XeLaTeX and fontspec issue

Thanks, Richard.

I’ve been removing the .aux file between tries. Just in case.

So your ~/Library/Fonts folder is empty? I’m no expert (obviously), but that seems odd. If XeLaTeX isn’t going to this folder for fonts, where is it getting them?

Herb is MUCH better than I am at this type of debugging.

It might be useful to remove your .aux file from your source folder and then typeset again,
although I do not understand the error you got. This file was missing when I first typeset,
of course, but then I typeset again when it was present, without problems.

Also on my system

/Users/koch/Library/Fonts

exists, but the folder is empty.

Okay. So there was one ~/Library/texmf/… file in the console output: 1 2005 copy of fontspec.sty. Got rid of that file and now the MWE acts like it’s processing fine, but it outputs a blank pdf and I get the following error message:

No file XeLateXMWETest.aux.
[1] (./XeLateXMWETest.aux)
xdvipdfmx:fatal: Cannot proceed without the font: /Users/me/Library/Fonts/Times New Roman

I double checked and Times New Roman is in /Users/me/Library/Fonts. But it’s not being found. Font mapping issue? (I seem to remember having to do something with this years ago.)

Jeff,

I just tried your sample program myself on Sequoia and had no problems.
Here are two suggestions, although readers of this mailing group are usually
much better than I am at finding errors.

1) When you reinstalled MacTeX, you got TeX Live as it was last March.
You might want to update to the latest stuff using TeX Live Utility.

2) (Probably a better hint) Often problems occur because users added
files to ~/Library/texmf. This location is searched first, so old files can override
more recent versions in TeX Live and MacTeX. The easy way to
check is to look at the console output and search for entries that
do not start with

        /usr/local/texlive/2025/...

but instead start with

        ~/Library/texmf/.......

Of course special files from your publisher are fine there, but files
that duplicate files already in TeX Live are very suspicious.
