The structure may be something like ~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bib/<files>. </div><div><br></div><div>Incidentally, since this is a personal .bib file, there is no standard (or default) system directory where it can be; Herb was suggesting that ~/Library/texmf/bibtex is where most people (me included) put their .bib files. Two things I can further suggest:</div><div><br></div><div>1) I am assuming you have already checked the directory where the relevant .tex files are located? Many people also keep the relevant .bib files relevant to a writing project in the directory with the .tex files.</div><div><br></div><div>2) You may wish to check the \bibliography{} command in the root .tex folder. Perhaps this will include a path specification to where the files are. Well, I am not sure how worried I should be now. Your instructions did remind me of the Opt-Go feature to find ~/Library. But when I do that, now I get no Library folder. Similarly, if I use Shift-Opt-Go and look for /Library/TeX/Local, I do get such a folder,
and inside it a bib folder, and inside it a folder called local, but it is empty. So I am still at a loss for where TeXShop is finding a .bib file.<br>

I assume you're using a recent TeX Live as installed by the MacTeX installer package. Personal .bib files should be stored in ~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bib (remember that ~/Library is the Library folder in your HOME folder --- assuming you're using OS X 10.7 or
later, hold the Opt key down while clicking on the Go menu in Finder and a Library item will appear. Note: this is NOT /Library but ~/Library).<br>

You can also put .bib files in the texmf-local tree which you can get to by opening /Library/TeX/Local (NOTE: here it's /Library, NOT ~/Library) and they reside in bibtex/bib (the same as in your Personal Tree which starts at ~/Library/texmf). The Distribution's
bib files are stared in the texmf-dist tree at bibtex/bib.<br>

Note: bibtex will search first in your Personal tree, then in the texmf-local tree and finally in the texmf-dist tree and use the first .bib file with a matching name.<br>

PS: it's actually a bit more complicated but this should help you.<br>
