In Safari, neither the lock nor the https:// prefix showed up in the url. MacTeX (which installs TeX Live as its TeX distribution) as well as other version of TeX Live for other systems (e.g., UNIX, multiple Linux distributions and Windows) are all created by volunteers and distributed free of charge. The complete job is done under
the umbrella of the TeX Users Group which also publishes a journal (TUGboat) and helps with CTAN and other projects. These are all supported by membership fees (paper and DVDs aren't free and there needs to be an office manager to keep track of everything
all the volunteers do as well as support CTAN and updates (via tlmgr or TeX Live Manager on the Mac).<br class="">
