Thanks Yusuke and Herb for your quick responses.<br>

Putting !TEX root=main.tex* worked first time*, but subsequently mostly not.<br>
Even after shutting down TeXShop and restart.<br>
All files share the same directory so an explicit path wasn't needed.<br>
(I take it the "%" is not to be included).<br>
<br>
I inserted !TEX root=main.tex only in one \include file at a time, nowhere<br>
else.<br>
So I am puzzled why it worked only sporadically.<br>

Sometimes it makes sense to read the documentation, and TeXshop has a very good one. Take a look at "TEXShop Tips & Tricks", Section 2.4 to see what you have done wrong. This manual can be found under Help -> TEXShop Tips & Tricks.<br>

You must have the % since that line is read by TeXShop and should be a comment as seen by the typesetting engine. If the root file is called mybook.tex and it has \include{chapter1} with chapter1.tex in the same folder as mybook.tex then chapter1.tex should have the line<br>
<br>
% !TEX root = mybook.tex<br>
<br>
(with the %) as the first line of the file.<br>
