<div>Using the figure environment, what determines the size set aside for a figure?</div>

<div>I am drawing a series of pictures (grids) some focusing on only a part of the whole.  The inital overview of the whole does not need to be at the same</div>

<div>I can change the size of the image of the grid using the [unit= ] setting when starting a pspicture, but that doesn’t affect the size of the float, which</div>
<div>wastes a lot of space and messes up float placement when I try to place a smaller version of the full picture.</div>
<div>On the other hand, I would like to keep the coordinate system the same across these various pictures, rather than re-calculating the coordinates to </div>

<div>In the attached, I tried to see the effect of playing with the unit size, but clearly this doesn’t affect the size of the box surrounding the picture—if both</div>
<div>are set (in different figures) at the same scale, then the box for the bottom half is half as high as for the full object, but a picture of the full object at </div>
<div>half scale is still still in a box twice as high as a full-scale picture of just the bottom.</div>
