Yes. I was able to reproduce this 100% on Carbon emacs and aquamacs
without customization (emacs -q).

GNU Emacs 22.1.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin8.10.0, Carbon Version
1.6.0) of 2007-11-06 on cf-ppc-macosx.usr.sourceforge.jp

GNU Emacs 22.1.50.1 (powerpc-apple-darwin7.9.0, Carbon Version 1.6.0)
of 2007-10-01 on applecore.inf.ed.ac.uk - Aquamacs Distribution 1.2a

David Reitter says he can't reproduce it in CVS acquamacs. Could it
be just a version 22 thing?

Can you reproduce this when launching Carbon Emacs without
customisation? In GNU Emacs 23.0.50, 23.0.60, 22.1.50, and Carbon
Emacs from December edition I cannot find failures with TeX, LOG,
Perl, AppleScript, and other file types with Mac line endings, i.e.
CR or ^M. It fails for me with PFB font files – because some of them
start with (legal) binary garbage before the characteristic

	%!PS-Adobe-

Interestingly the file programme does not fail to recognise both
variants of PostScript font programmes ...

What’s the difference between OS X and Vista?

Microsoft employees are excited about OS X…
