[OS X Emacs] Fringe options not saving

I successfully used

Options -> Vew -> Fringe -> Empty Line Indicators

but Save Options isn't preserving this setting on restarts. 
Looking at the time stamp in customizations.el, 
I see that the file is being modified.

Any ideas?
