[OS X Emacs] how to get arrows in fringes

I'm running with

Options -> Hard Word Wrap   (unchecked)
Options -> Soft Word Wrap   (unchecked)
Options -> Auto Word Wrap in Text Modes  (unchecked)
Options -> View -> Fringe -> Left and Right (checked)
Options -> View -> Fringe -> Empty Line Indicators (checked)
Options -> View -> Fringe -> Buffer Boundaries -> Opposite, Arrows  
Right (checked)

and I see this:

I haven't found a combination of settings that will make the arrows  
appear.
