Yes, tabbar does play a role, but the Aquamacs tabs are substantially different not just in appearance, but also in semantics.
tabbar has its own way of selecting tabs to display - one may find that more or less useful, but it is certainly different.  Aquamacs's tabs are simpler and much like tabs in other apps like Firefox or the Terminal.
