[OS X Emacs] weird option-<left arrow> behavior

Occasionally, I'm option-left-arrowing backward through words, and my 
font decreases in size from 12 to 11 point. Huh?

Is there a keybinding similar to opt-left that makes the font smaller? 
What's the opposite, so I don't have to open up the osx font chooser to 
reverse the accidental change?
